Erland really does try not to cage them in too much... though he does monitor them, and has safeties to prevent anything too serious... he does let them wander a fair deal...!
The thing he finds frustrating, I think, is the issue of freedom. It tends to be the one thing that gets brought up a lot, and he really tries to make it work, but it seems like nothing short of letting them bungie jump without the bungie is enough. Granted, he's kiiind of a creeper about it, but. It kinda is what keeps him from just ending everything, so. Important.
Shiyoko bothers him right now because he really wants her to relax more. He didn't really like how she was changing herself to fit a mold, even if he liked the mold. It seems forced and uncomfortable for her. Also, I think he resents taking care of Kamala as much as he does, just a little bit. It's understandable since he can do a lot more than Shiyoko really can, but still, I see him taking care of Kamala at night almost all the time, only handing off to Shiyoko when he can't calm Kamala down. Of course, one could argue that it's Erland's fault for them having a baby quite so soon...
Niyo has always frustrated Erland, from way back. He kind of wishes he loved her more, or found something cute about her at least, so he could be more doting, and thus hopefully more comforting. He mostly just pities her, and really wishes she could find happiness. He would really like her to raise dragons and cattle for him, though. >.>; Selfish guy.
Yasu frustrates Erland too, because it feels so close, and yet so far. Setsu frustrates him because of the whole 'military' thing. Generally not a world he wants to get into, but it's kinda inevitable too.
Since I'm thinking of it, how much longer would Shiyoko have waited had Erland not convinced her to have a baby right away?
Likewise, how soon is Erland likely to get pressured into having (another) kid from his various lovers?
